We Have A Remedy

Just saw Roger Daltrey last night at DPAC in Durham, NC w/ my parents. I wasn't expecting much, being a big fan of the Who, but a little wary of old rock stars and their comeback, experimental shows where they usually just strum an acoustic guitar and try to belt out the old songs like they used to. Though he was suffering from a sore throat and had to sip tea between songs, Roger did not disappoint. I never thought I'd get to see a live member of The Who perform, and I must say it was a magical experience. (his band was not too shabby either). Getting to see Pictures of Lilly, Behind Blue Eyes, and Baba O'Riley was one of the high points of my musical life. Roger still has it - despite his 65 years; he's a true entertainer, showman and a gifted singer for sure.

In honor of The Who - one of the greatest fucking live bands of all time, here's some of my favorite live clips:

The Who - A Quick One - R&R Circus. This video was part of the Rolling Stones's concert/movie Rock N' Roll Circus. They had just come off of touring and blew the headliners (The Stones) out of the water. It's rumored that Mick and Keith held onto this footage for a while because they were embarrassed at their shitty performance in comparison to The Who's bombastic, energetic version of A Quick One While He's Away. (I love when Pete almost knocks down the drum overhead). I recommend renting this entire movie- there's some cool unique performances and the film quality and sound are amazing.

The infamous performance on The Smothers Brothers in 1967. Earlier before the show Keith apparently bribed a stage hand to pack his bass drum w/ extra explosives for the big closing smash up they were known for. Just check it out for yourself - this may have contributed to Pete's later becoming deaf. (Moon really shows his comedic side, sarcastically mimicking playing without actually hitting the drums). This was the last time the Who appeared on an American variety show.

Isle of White Festival, 1970. Again, this entire performance is worth seeing in high quality DVD format. Entwistle's got the famous Skeleton suit on, and Pete's got the white coveralls. This to me is when they were at their peak live ability - 4 front men bashing it out together.
