Atlas Sound AKA Bradford Cox (Deerhunter) has been releasing free EPs on his blog. These are generally 2 song ordeals, usually one cover song and one original that he spends an afternoon or two recording. I've been downloading them ever since I heard the buzz, and the latest one is pretty good. The first song Doctor is a cover of a song from The Five Discs - a Brooklyn doo-wop band from the early sixties. It reminds me of that wall of sound era, w/ a little bit of Blacklips style distorted vocals going on. The better of the two tracks, per usual is the second song The Screens. It starts off w/ simple bongo drums - think early T-Rex, and soothing harmonica - think Neil Young's On The Beach. Cox has a way of taking simple words and melodies and making them stick w/ his strange cooing short-delayed voice. I think he's probably one of few important musicians currently swimming through the Pitchfork cesspool.
