DEATH

I was recently browsing for some music at my favorite local record store CD Alley, when I heard something interesting over the speakers. I was gonna use a gift certificate to buy the new Beach House record and a Richard and Linda Thompson "Greatest Hits" type album; I did end up buying both of those records, but that isn't what I'm writing about here...Back to the music that was playing - it was like some of the most raw, enticing punk rock n' roll I'd ever heard, and yet I had no idea who it was - "Is this an unreleased Bad Brains demo or something? Maybe a compilation of 1970s bands that never got much attention? The Damned, the Stooges?.....HOLY SHIT! listen to that sick breakdown and guitar solo! These guys have chops!"

Presenting DEATH.

Wikipedia says:

Death was a band formed in Detroit, Michigan, in 1971 by the brothers Bobby (bass, vocals), David (guitar), and Dannis (drums) Hackney. The African-American trio started out as an R&B band but switched to rock after seeing an Alice Cooper show.

The New York Times Says:

Forgotten except by the most fervent punk rock record collectors — the band’s self-released 1976 single recently traded hands for the equivalent of $800 — Death would likely have remained lost in obscurity if not for the discovery last year of a 1974 demo tape in Bobby Sr.’s attic. Released last month by Drag City Records as “... For the Whole World to See,” Death’s newly unearthed recordings reveal a remarkable missing link between the high-energy hard rock of Detroit bands like the Stooges and MC5 from the late 1960s and early ’70s and the high-velocity assault of punk from its breakthrough years of 1976 and ’77.

I say:
This is fucking amazing and I can't believe I've never heard it / heard of them before. They're like The MC5 + Bad Brains + Thin Lizzy COMBINED.....and this was written before all those dudes. Jeezuz! (I ususally don't get this excited)

Just listen to this:

Tell me Bad Brains never heard these guys......

Also apparently MOS DEF is making a film about them! Can't wait to see it!

Go buy the record ...FOR ALL THE WORLD TO SEE From Drag City HERE
