Gary Wilson - You Think You Really Know Me
Gary Wilson is a stalwart and pioneer of mid seventies avant-jazz-new-wave-lounge-weirdness. I first heard his music on a friend's mix tape and instantly fell in love with the smooth grooves and creepy lyrics.
After recording his debut/masterpiece You Think You Really Know Me in his parents' basement (for real), which he pressed himself and self-released, Gary went into self-imposed exile from the music community/the world at large. It wasn't until 1996, when musicians like Beck started citing him as an influence, that Gary Wilson climbed his way (somewhat) out of obscurity. By this point Gary had achieved an underground success.
In the 2000s the label Motel Records tracked him down to see if he'd let them repress You Think You Really Know Me. He worked at a porno store as his day job. He was playing keyboard in a weekly jazz act called Donnie Finnell & Company East at the Rancho Bernardino Lounge in San Diego.
He agreed, and subsequently played a couple shows and eventually had a great documentary made about his music: You Think You Really Know Me: The Gary Wilson Story.
Since then he's released a handful of albums on indie labels, but none compare to this debut classic. ENJOY!
