Secret Message Machine - My New Favorite Local Band

Secret Message Machine is the brainchild of Michael Barrett (of Greensboro fame). This man played in the now somewhat defunct band Blank Blank, who shares the home recording "label" known as Subjective Collective. You can tell Michael has spent time alone, reflecting on the world around him in the wasteland/paradise of Greensboro, NC. It's evident he's spent many a night with the 4 track, scribbling down ideas and recording brilliant noise collages that compliment his undeniable pop sensibilities. With his newest collection, Giants, Madmen, and Ghosts he's managed to combine dream-like visuals with the everyday mundane aspects of life - getting up, going to work, driving home, picking flowers, to create music that makes me love the deep, beautiful, sadness that always seems to pop up this time of year. The choppy immediacy of Neutral Milk Hotel, is combined with the tingling swagger of Smog, but in the end, it's beyond comparison because it's just Michael making honest, accessible music completely on his own. I'm jealous.....
Here are some tracks I like: Leatherwing and Insomnia
The whole album is available for download HERE
