Just found a link to an interview that a young Johnny Rotten did on Capital Radio in England in the year 1977. Whatever you feel about the guy / his music - I found this special gem to be interesting and informative. It gives a glimpse of a very intelligent, though very disillusioned, and somewhat insecure youth. But which of us wasn't? I think therefore I am. It shows you that the guy really just loved music - of all kinds. His record collection would stand up to the most pretentious college radio DJ today, and yet I find it to be consistently good and easy on the ears throughout. Hear him spin everything from CAN to Peter Hammill, Captain Beefheart, and John Cale, along w/ an impressive collection of rare R&B and Soul, and of course a healthy dose of great old Reggae. One of my personal favs is "Revolution Blues" by Neil Young off his great, overlooked album On the Beach. I'd have to say, a lot of this stuff would go on one of my radio broadcasts - makes sense why I was so attracted to The Sex Pistols in my early high school days. Overall, this 2 hour broadcast / interview shows that there's "Two sides to every story" - though not entirely clear of cliche snotty "punk attitude", it is certainly an interesting listen for anyone who's curious about the late seventies punk music scene, and one of its reluctant leaders.
