Sonic Youth: Still Crazee After All These Years....

There's a new Sonic Youth album "The Eternal" out today on Matador Records. It's really good, keeping w/ the good old style and continuing on the tradition where later albums like "Murray St." began - angular, beautiful guitar dissonance and long composed jams, amidst tight drumming and solid bass = Sonic Youth (pretty much). This album in particular feels more realized than both Sonic Nurse and Rather Ripped. I have grown to love this band more and more; especially after seeing Thurston Moore (the solo project) live in NY last year w/ the infamous Roky Erickson. it was a magical experience to see a man so kind and so influential - he's really good at balancing the energy of a kid who just wants to rock out w/ an older, more savvy connoisseur of this century's best psychedelic rock music, and distilling that into a great live performance - pretty & electrified. That's how this new album is: prettiness and rockness.

Unlike many bands their age, Sonic Youth didn't let drugs and partying, or just sheer age ruin their progress - I can safely say that they have continued to grow and develop their unique style. Anyways, this album is kinda giving me chills right now as I listen on lala.com

You should just listen and see what I'm saying:

Then go buy it, preferably a physical copy, maybe even vinyl....yeah it's that good.

AND since I always post video stuff - check out this sweet Pitchfork series ADD (analog, digital, digital) of the geniuses shredding new tunes in their practice space:

(especially dig Lee Renaldo's shades, and wait! There's Mark Ibold, the bassist of Pavement jamming on bass....I guess old friends stick together)
